Monticello Motor Club is making a bid to hold the United States Grand Prix.

A few months ago, [MMC chairman] Bill McMichael and I met with Bernie Ecclestone, President/CEO of Formula One Management (FOM), and discussed the terms for an exclusive 10-year United States Grand Prix to be hosted at MMC.

Shortly thereafter, Hermann Tilke, the chief engineer and circuit designer for F1, spent time at MMC and confirmed that our track and surrounding properties, with some expansion and minor track modifications, is an excellent location for a Grand Prix.

Since receiving a letter of understanding from FOM confirming their hope to bring the U.S. Grand Prix to Monticello, Bill and I have continued to secure the backing and support of local, state, and federal politicians and organizations.

Earlier this year Ecclestone said he didn’t intend to take the United States Grand Prix back to Indianapolis because “It’s all the wrong crowd and the wrong people.” Is a private motor club a better fit with his view of where F1 should be racing?

This line from the letter seems to suggest fans wishing to attend the race may have to become members of the club:

If F1 comes to Monticello, our intent is to preserve MMC as, first and foremost, a private country club. Obviously, demand will accelerate as well as the initiation fee for new members.

Or they might just be hoping the increased publicity for their club gains them new members.

Ecclestone has been chasing a Grand Prix in New York for decades but Monticello would not satisfy his desire to have a race within sight of the Manhattan skyline – a dream the aborted Jersey City project would have fulfilled.

A letter has gone out to members of New York's Monticello Motor Club, an exclusive driving resort race track ninety miles from Manhattan, informing them of progress in talks to bring the United States Grand Prix to the facility for 10 years, starting in 2012.

Ari Straus, President of MMC, has told Grandprix.com exclusively: “MMC Chairman Bill McMichael and I are honored that Formula One World Championship is considering Monticello Motor Club as a venue for the United States Grand Prix, and we are taking this opportunity with all the seriousness it requires. Hermann Tilke has surveyed the facility and laid out what modifications we need to implement, from the standpoint of the circuit, as well as access and local infrastructure.”

The circuit was opened in 2008 in the lower Catskill mountains, as a resort for driving enthusiasts, and boasts a membership roster that includes NASCAR Champion Jeff Gordon and entertainer Jerry Seinfeld. It has been used exclusively for non-commercial purposes until now, but is poised to make the changes necessary to accept an event of the level of Formula One. It is currently the nearest major road course racing circuit to New York City.

Straus said, “We are in a position to move forward for many reasons, notably our proximity to the New York City metropolitan area, and the flexibility we have in terms of making changes to the track itself and its access for fans. Our members are a very forward thinking group of individuals who are a great asset themselves to this project, on different many levels.”

Straus further asserts that realistic funding is in place to warrant moving forward and that a letter of intent has been signed by Formula One Management, that allows the next steps to be to be taken.

Straus and McMichael have been engaged in talks with F1 Boss Bernie Ecclestone for the past few months, and while admitedly far from a done deal, signs point towards this being a serious project.

Ronnie James Dio’s life is to be celebrated at a public memorial service in Los Angeles later this month, it’s been announced.

The former Black Sabbath vocalist passed away on Sunday following a battle from cancer. He was 67.

Fans have been asked to gather at The Hall of Liberty in Hollywood from 2pm (local time) on May 30.

A statement on Dio's official Facebook page said: “This will be a celebration of the life and music of Ronnie James Dio and is open to all of his friends and fans from around the world.”

Musicans across the globe have paid tribute to Dio, who also worked with Rainbow and Heaven and Hell.

KISS said they would "miss" the star, while Ozzy Osbourne, who was replaced by Dio in Black Sabbath, said he was "very saddened".

Influential heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio, best known for his iconic wailing for Black Sabbath and, before that, Rainbow, has died of stomach cancer.

His death was announced via a statement on his website from wife Wendy Dio, which read:

Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. [Updated at 2:45 p.m.: Dio's stomach cancer diagnosis became public in late 2009. Earlier
this year, the artist announced that a planned European tour with
his band Heaven & Hell would have to be canceled due to his declining health. Dio, however, was able to appear in Los Angeles at
an early April  metal event sponsored by hard rock magazine Revolver, where he spoke of the challenges of dealing with
chemotherapy. 

"I never realized what a difficult thing it was to
go through," he said in a video interview with Artisan News. "It's a
real cumulative effect -- the more you have, the more it piles up on
top and it takes longer and longer to get over it. I find it very
difficult to eat. I don't like to eat, anyway, so I guess that's OK. But
I know I have to. But this makes it very, very hard. But if you're
determined to beat it, then you have to go with what you believe is
going to beat it for you."

Dio was born July 10, 1949, according
to the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll, yet there has
long been dispute about his age. Fans have long put Dio's true birth
date as the summer of 1942, and numerous reports of Dio's death have
cited his age as 67.

Dio replaced Ozzy Osbourne as the lead
singer of Black Sabbath, who left the band in 1979 after increasingly
reckless behavior. Dio's first album with the group, "Heaven &
Hell," has been certified platinum by industry trade body the RIAA,
putting its total shipments at more than 1 million copies.
 Soon after the release of 1981's "Mob Rules," Dio left Black Sabbath
to start his own group, Dio.

Dio continued to record with his
namesake group into this decade, and more recently had formed Heaven
& Hell. The latter was essentially a reunion of the Obsourne-less
Black Sabbath, and released the studio effort "The Devil You Know" in
2009. The Rhino album entered the U.S. pop chart at No. 8 after selling
30,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.]
